IMMIGRATION & CHECKPOINTS AUTHORITY

Learning Objectives

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) was formed on 1 Apr 2003 from a merger of Singapore Immigration & Registration (SIR) and a significant part of Customs & Excise Department (CED). The mission of ICA is to ensure that the movement of people, goods and conveyances through our checkpoints is legitimate and lawful.

A visit to ICA would thus give students a better understanding of its roles and functions, in addition to how the Tuas Command operates to clear people, goods and conveyances. Students would also learn about the immigration offender problem, our enforcement efforts against immigration offenders and smuggling of contraband. In short, the visit would allow students to appreciate the important role that ICA plays in making Singapore a safe and secure best home for Singaporeans. ICA image002

Learning Site
Tuas Checkpoint which ICA operates with other agencies became operational in Jan 98. The merger of SIR and CED has brought about better coordination of the security agencies working at the checkpoints. Students will get to discover how and what types of technology we are using to perform various functions at the checkpoint. An interactive session with the students to discuss issues involving checkpoint operations and illegal immigrants/smuggling of contraband will be conducted. The purpose of the discussion is to solicit active participation, raise awareness and inject realism to the concept of enforcement at our checkpoints. Students will become aware and understand the need for operational readiness and vigilance at the checkpoints. There will also be a walk-through of our primary and secondary check areas to observe our operations with the use of the various systems and equipment.
