Poi Ching School commemorated Total Defence (TD) Day over a week with different focus and differentiated activities for staff and pupils (of the different levels). The following are some of the highlights. The focus of TD Day for the P3-6 pupils was on economic defence. Through the Social Studies Financial Literacy programme, we were able to have the Necessary Stage perform for us (courtesy of Citibank) “Agent Penny & Will Power in Budget Boot Camp on Total Defence Day – a timely and apt programme in view of the uncertain US economy and rising costs and price hikes in Singapore caused by 1)freak weather conditions in food producing countries - leading to a decrease in food supply, 2)rising oil prices and 3)an increased demand for food and raw materials by the more affluent China. The pupils were given a comic book to reinforce what they have learnt about financial literacy after the show. The programme kicked off with the Primary Four pupils visiting the Singapore Discovery Centre to learn more about TD through fun, games, activities and visiting the special booths set up by the different agencies promoting TD. Through the demonstration and sharing by the experts, the pupils were able to experiance the 5 aspects of TD.
All staff (teaching and non-teaching) formed multi-racial groups of 5s to take part in a quiz conducted during Contact Time to keep ourselves current before we could impact the lives of our charges - the pupils and our colleagues - our partners in National Education. The questions included recall and application questions adapted from the Total Defence Day Commemoration Package produced by NE Branch. After the quiz, the questions were uploaded to the school website for pupils and parents’ access to learn more about TD.
All in all, commemorating TD Day has helped us to be more resourceful - to integrate and engage the help of different agencies and the corporate to play a part in our commemoration of TD Day. Indeed it was “It’s personal. Play your part.”. Submitted by: |
