TAN KAH KEE NE ART CHALLENGE

The Tan Kah Kee NE Art Challenge is envisioned as a platform for embracing both National Education and the Visual Arts. Through this it is hoped that participants can showcase their appreciation of National Education and their awareness of the issues it encompasses using the Visual Arts as a medium of expression. The TKK NE Art Challenge is named after local pioneer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Mr. Tan Kah Kee, who is also the founder of Nan Chiau Primary School. For the TKK NE Art Challenge, the Challenge Shield (which will be retained by the school of the gold award winner) and all prizes were sponsored by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan of which Nan Chiau Primary is affiliated to. In addition, the Challenge was also supported by the Tan Kah Kee Foundation. For the inaugural event, Nan Chiau Primary was honoured to have as its Guest-of-Honour, Mrs. Tan Wai Lan, Deputy Director/NE Branch/MOE and also a distinguished panel of judges, consisting of individuals who have long been engaged in the field of education.The competition on that day was intense and many schools came well prepared. After the opening address by Mrs. Molly Soong, Vice Principal, Nan Chiau Primary, and a short briefing on the logistics of the competition, a hush descended upon the Kong Chian Hall as the prizes were hotly contested by the young participants aged between 10 to 12, who kneaded, painted, and sketched furiously away in the cool air of the air-conditioned Hall. In the end, the winners emerged after a round of intense tallying of marks after 20 shortlisted pieces were scrutinized by the judges. |
